My journey from IAM Advanced Rider to National Observer Mentor, helping others master their skills and ride with confidence and control

Mastering the Ride: My Journey Through IAM Advanced Motorcycle Riding

As a motorcyclist, I’ve always believed there’s no such thing as knowing it all. The road keeps us learning, keeps us sharp, and keeps us humble. That mindset is what led me to take on the IAM Advanced Rider Course — a decision that not only transformed the way I ride but also opened the door to a new chapter of my motorcycling journey.

Since then, I’ve gone on to pass the IAM Masters, the highest civilian riding qualification in the UK, and I’ve recently stepped into the role of National Observer Mentor, coaching other advanced riders as they train to become National Observers themselves.

It’s been a journey of personal growth, passion, and giving back to the riding community that’s given me so much.

Why I Took the Leap

Like many riders, I hit a point where I felt there was more to unlock in my riding. I wasn’t chasing speed or thrills — I was looking for precision, control, and a deeper understanding of the road. I’d heard of IAM RoadSmart and the reputation of the Advanced Rider Course, so I decided to give it a go.

From the very first observed ride, I realised this was something special. It wasn’t about nit-picking or overanalysing — it was about refining my approach, learning to see the road differently, and becoming smoother, more confident, and more aware in every riding scenario.

From Rider to Observer to Mentor

Completing the IAM Advanced Course was only the beginning. I found it so valuable that I wanted to share it — to help other riders experience that same shift. So I trained as a National Observer, guiding others through the process and watching them grow into safer, sharper riders.

But the journey didn’t stop there. I challenged myself further by taking on the IAM Masters, which pushed my riding skills and roadcraft to the highest standard. Passing that was a real milestone — not just for the personal achievement, but for the level of understanding and discipline it demanded.

And now, as a National Observer Mentor, I’ve taken on a new role: coaching experienced advanced riders as they take the next step to become National Observers themselves. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of that progression — shaping not just riders, but future coaches who will go on to raise the standard across the board.

Why This Matters

Every rider, no matter how experienced, can benefit from advanced training. It’s not about passing a test or riding “by the book” — it’s about evolving. It’s about sharpening your awareness, making better decisions, and riding with real purpose.

What I love about IAM training — both as a rider and now as a mentor — is how it changes the way you think on the road. You start to see things earlier, anticipate better, and handle your bike with confidence in any conditions. And it’s not just safer — it’s more enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

The IAM journey has given me more than better riding skills. It’s connected me with a brilliant community, given me opportunities to grow, and allowed me to help others achieve their own riding goals.

Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been riding for decades, there’s always another level. And for those who are ready to take that next step — iamroadsmart.com
