Day 7 – Malvik to Sandnessjøen:

Distance: 403 km | Time: 7 hours 35 minutes | Weather: Showers & yes more rain

Day seven began just outside Trondheim in the small coastal town of Malvik. The morning air had that crisp Norwegian bite to it, the kind that wakes you up faster than any coffee ever could. Bikes loaded, intercoms crackling into life, and the road north waiting patiently.

Today’s mission was simple on paper: ride from Malvik to Sandnessjøen. In reality, this stretch of Norway is anything but simple. It’s where the scenery begins to stretch out, the roads grow quieter, and you start to feel like you’re riding deeper into the wild north.

Following the Long Road North

The first part of the day followed the E6 northbound. It’s Norway’s main artery, running almost the entire length of the country, but don’t let the “main road” description fool you. Even the major routes here twist through valleys, skirt along lakes and climb steadily through dramatic landscapes.

Traffic was light, which meant we could settle into that perfect touring rhythm. You know the one. Helmet on, engine humming, and mile after mile slipping away under the tyres.

Every so often the road would open up to reveal huge lakes reflecting the sky like a mirror, with mountains rising quietly in the distance. Norway does that a lot. Just when you think the scenery can’t improve, it casually throws another jaw-dropping view around the next corner.

Naturally, this also meant plenty of unscheduled photo stops. It’s almost impossible not to.

Coffee Stops and Roadside Conversations ☕

A proper bike trip isn’t complete without the occasional roadside coffee stop, and Norway delivers those in style.

Small fuel stations dotted along the route became welcome breaks to stretch the legs, top up the tanks and grab a coffee. The locals are always curious when two fully loaded bikes roll in. Where are you from? Where are you going? Nordkapp? Good luck!

These short conversations are often the unexpected highlights of the trip.

Riding Into the North

As the day progressed the landscape slowly changed. The forests became denser, the mountains steeper, and the feeling of remoteness grew stronger. Villages became smaller and further apart.

You start to realise just how big Norway really is.

Long sweeping sections of road allowed us to make good progress, but the scenery kept forcing us to slow down and take it all in. Waterfalls appeared beside the road. Rivers carved through deep valleys. Snow still clung stubbornly to some distant peaks.

This is the sort of riding that reminds you why motorcycle touring is so addictive.

Approaching the Coast

By late afternoon we began edging closer to the coast again as we approached Sandnessjøen. The light had softened into that golden northern glow that photographers dream about.

Just before arriving, the landscape revealed one of the region’s most famous sights: the dramatic mountain range known locally as the Seven Sisters rising sharply from the surrounding land.

After a full day in the saddle, rolling into Sandnessjøen felt like a small victory. Helmets off, bikes parked, and that familiar feeling of satisfaction after a proper day’s ride.

Reflections on Day Seven

Days like this are the backbone of a big motorcycle adventure.

No huge tourist attractions. No major landmarks ticked off the list. Just hundreds of kilometres of beautiful roads, great riding and the quiet satisfaction of heading further north with every mile.

And the best part?

Tomorrow we ride even closer to the Arctic.

The adventure continues. 🌍🏍️

In June 2026, Steve & Duncan aka The Happy Bikers are setting off on a trip of a lifetime. We are riding around the world. We would love you to follow our journey. The Happy Bikers Global Adventure will be shared on our socials.
