Day 8 – Sandnessjøen to Lødingen: Arctic Line, Ferry Hustle & Sunny Spells (🏍️ 469 km | ⏱️ 6h 17m)
Weather: Drizzle → heavy rain → dry from 11:00; colder & windy near the Arctic Circle ❄️💨
Route: Sandnessjøen → Arctic Circle Visitor Centre → Bognes → Ferry → Lødingen
Waterproofs… Again! 🌧️🧥
Another day, another dose of waterproofs. We rolled out of Sandnessjøen in a steady drizzle that got heavier through the morning. By 11:00 the rain stopped and the roads dried, but as we closed in on the Arctic Circle the temperature dropped and the wind picked up—so the waterproofs stayed on as an extra layer.
Crossing the Arctic Circle 🧭❄️
We reached the Arctic Circle Visitor Centre just after midday and parked the bikes right by the entrance for some celebratory photos. Lunch was a local treat: smoked reindeer in a soft roll. If we hadn’t been told, we’d have guessed beef—rich, savoury, and perfect riding fuel. 🥪
From Barren to Evergreen 🌬️🌊🌲
Pushing north, the scenery turned stark and barren, with strong gusts and rivers running full—white crests everywhere. Then, dropping off the mountains, the landscape flipped: suddenly dense trees, and the road opened up into long sweeping bends, broken only by the many tunnels. A rider’s rhythm section. 🛣️
Ferry Dash to Bognes 🚐🚢
Nearing Bognes for the final stretch, a convoy of motorhomes came the other way—sure sign the ferry was in. With 5 km to go we upped the pace, only to see the barriers down as we arrived. But luck loves a Happy Biker: the barriers lifted and we were waved straight aboard. 😄
Lødingen Evening: One Small Hiccup 🍺⛔
We docked in Lødingen, found a campsite (mainly for motorhomes) and a small patch of grass just big enough for our tents. Supplies run… foiled! Local licensing meant no beer after 18:00. Lesson learned—won’t make that mistake again. 😅 Still, tents up, food sorted, and a quiet night before the push north.
